Advocacy Chair: Pam Konde
Chairperson: Keeps the PTA informed of actions taken by the School Board, the County Board of Supervisors and Fairfax County of PTAs affecting our school. Attend meetings of these groups if possible. Makes recommendations on actions Westbriar PTA should take such as speaking at meetings, hearings, writing letters. Gives special attention to Fairfax County Budget matters. Maintains a blog on the PTA website regarding the Budget Status. Volunteers are needed to help attend meetings and report back to the PTA.
Audit Committee: Yelda Telyaz
Chairperson: Leads a committee to certify the accuracy of the books and records of the organization and to assure the membership that the association's funds are being managed properly within the regulations set forth by the PTA ByLaws. Submit an audit report to the PTA Board. Committee Members needed: meet once or twice during the summer to help review the audit checklist and work together to recommend best practices.
A-Z Directory: Janice Philips
Box Tops: Rhonda Gleditsch
Chairperson: Coordinates the collection of Box tops from General Mills cereals and other General Mills products which are redeemed at a profit of 10 cents per box top. Help spread the word to look for the special Box Top Education symbol on the General Mills Food products and send them to school with your child in an envelope marked "BOX TOPS - PTA".
Camp Invention (Summer Camp): Suneeta Rana
Chairperson: Works with the vendor partner, Stemtree/Camp Invention, to organize a 3-week long summer camp sponsored by Westbriar at Spring Hill ES. This camp helps kids be innovative and discover or invent new things by re-using everyday items in the world around them. The registration process will be handled through the vendor. The chairperson is responsible for coordinating the contract, communicating the event, soliciting volunteers if needed, and liaise with the vendor.
Chess Club: Isabel Berio
Chairperson: Organizes the after-school Chess Program for grades 2-6 on Tuesdays. The Chess Club is coached by a Chess Master from the U. S. Chess Center. This is a popular program that serves 50-60 students per session. There is a waiting list of schools who want chess teachers, so it is important that Westbriar can continue to keep this program year after year. Volunteers help run the club which include registration processing, weekly setup, dismissal, and snack coordination.
Chairperson: The PTA sponsors several presentations (i.e. school assemblies) of music, theater, science and history to supplement the education of Westbriar students. The Chairperson coordinates the school assemblies by working with the school administration to identify the types of programs, identify artists, make necessary arrangements, and coordinate activities the day of the presentation.
Dinner Out: Christine Hosch
Chairperson: This person would organize two to three "family dinner nights" in the community during which a portion of the merchant's sales are donated to Westbriar PTA. Prior locations have been Let's Dish, Dominos Pizza and Foster's Grill.
Directory: Jennifer Sellers
Chairperson: Coordinates and implements the printing of the Westbriar School Directory containing Westbriar Family contact information and local merchant advertising. This is an ideal job to do from home.

Back to School Fun Night: Christine Hosch
This person or persons form a team to help with registration, volunteer recruitment, concessions, food trucks, etc. Committee Members: parent volunteers are welcome to join the planning committee to help organize this event. Volunteers: teens and adults are needed on event day to operate mid-way games, concessions, ticket sales and more.
Grace Arts: Jennifer Sellers
Chairperson: This educational and enrichment program introduces an artist’s or art topic monthly to students. We are participating in the program for 4 months out of the 2016-2017 school year. The chairperson organizes the volunteers who act as “Art Docents” in the classrooms. With the help of GRACE Arts, these “Art Docents” plan and prepare age appropriate art activities to support the artist or topic. Volunteers are needed to act as Art Docents and assistants: 2 – 4 volunteers are needed per classroom for one hour per month.
Grants: Deirdre Naughton
Chairperson: Organizes a team to provide refreshments for monthly teacher meetings, the welcome back-to-school teacher lunch, back-to-school coffee, kindergarten orientation and other events on an as-needed basis. Volunteers: Like to cook and share recipes? This committee is for you! As food and beverages are needed, we email a request for volunteers for a specific event. You sign up as desired and then drop off your contribution during school hours or by a specified time. This is a great opportunity for working parents or parents with small children to contribute. We need your food, cookies, scones, sandwiches, etc., not your presence! If you can't cook, we still want you. We welcome contributions of soda, paper goods and prepared foods.
Halloween Bingo: Jenni Bae
Chairperson: Organizes a fun evening for school families held in late October where kids of all ages play Bingo dressed in their Halloween costumes. Responsible for advertising the program in Falcon Express/Tuesday Folders. Volunteers are needed to work registration, set-up and clean up.
International Night Celebration: Alina Virnik
This is a program to showcase the diversity of our students! The chairperson will work closely with the principal to organize an evening that includes anything from food, fashion, artwork, student exhibits, etc.
Martial Arts: David Teitelbaum
Chairperson: Works with the Master Instructor, David Teitelbaum, to coordinate advertisement and registration for Martial Arts classes.
Math Olympiad: Crystal Petersen
Chairpersons: Help to set-up and coach the Westbriar Math Olympiad team (grades 3-6). Sign-up annually through "Math Olympiad" (http://www.moems.org/), team includes up to 35 students. Use weekly study guides to help students practice problem solving, administer competitions one time per month from November to March, and submit results online. Perfect for parents and kids that like math and want to do fun, challenging problem solving. Teams and students can win prizes.
New Family Liaison: Jenni Bae
Chairperson: The purpose of this role is to provide a liaison between the parents and the school for new students. Responsibilities include providing resources to parents of new students.
Odyssey of the Mind: Shawna Garver
Chairperson: Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. See http://www.odysseyofthemind.com for more details. Per the competition rules, teams will be grouped according to Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 for the elementary levels.
Reflections: Lei Lu
Chairperson: Brings this national PTA recognition and achievement arts program to Westbriar students. Distributes program rules and regulations and encourages students to create and submit works in literature, music, visual arts and photography. Collects contest entries and displays artwork in showcase. Gives an informational workshop in October.
Rising Kindergarten Liaison: Jenni Bae
Chairperson: Acts as point of contact for parents of incoming kindergarteners. Organizes playdates during the summer so kindergarteners and their parents can meet one another before school starts.
Room Parents Coordinator: Jenni Bae
Coordinator: Helps to assure that parent volunteers are available to assist classroom teachers on special occasions such as parties and special classroom projects. Volunteers: Each classroom needs volunteers to act as Room Parents. In addition, there are opportunities for classroom help – parents of individual classrooms will receive these opportunities via email.
Safe Routes to School: Deirdre Naughton
School Supplies Program: Dara Dirth
Chairperson: Lines up a school supply company for supplies needed during the school year, signs the contract and communicates any changes to the company as necessary. (We've used SchoolKidz last year and this year.) In January, supply lists for the upcoming year need to be reviewed and revised with the Assistant Principal. K-2 supply forms must be given to the office staff for distribution in the kindergarten orientation folders. Order forms for existing students are distributed through Tuesday folders. Collect and fill out an order form spread sheet for the supply company. Volunteers are needed in August to sort boxes and deliver them to the classrooms prior to Open House.
Science Fair: Amy Speegle and Roopa Chowbey
Chairperson: Assembles a team to manage all the aspects of the two-day event. Chairperson works closely with Science lead, Assistant Principal and committee to ensure effective communication with staff and parents. Committee members: manage specific aspects of the Fair such as the student application process, local and online student resource listings, science coach coordination, etc. Volunteers: are needed for the event. There are many rewarding opportunities to help make this a great experience for our children, and we welcome your ideas.
Chairperson: Helps to set up Westbriar Science Olympiad teams in the upper grades with an emphasis on problem solving and hands-on learning practices that promote science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). See http://www.soinc.org for more information.
Sixth Grade Party: Alana Kugler & Christine Hosch
Chairperson: Organizes the end of the year party for the 6th grade. Helps 6th graders raise money to pay for their party. The day before graduation is set aside as a party day with sidewalk art, yearbook signing and various field day type activities or other fun activities you can think of!

Skate Night: Sandi Rothman
Chairperson: secures a date and contract with a venue (usually SkateQuest in Reston). This is a family fun ice skating extravaganza - Volunteers are needed to sell tickets at the door.
Special Ed Liason: Dorene Ryder
Chairperson: The purpose of this role is to provide a liaison between the parents and the school for students with special education needs. Responsibilities include providing resources to parents of special education students.

Spiritwear: Jennifer Sellers
Chairperson: Orders, compiles and distributes Westbriar logo items for sale at school.
Staff Basketball Game: Amy Blas
Chairperson: Works with the chairperson from Vienna Elementary School to ensure that our annual staff basketball game runs smoothly. Game will be held at Madison on a weeknight in early spring. Chairperson is responsible for recruiting staff, working with Spirit Wear chairs to organize Spirit Wear sales before and during the event, and procuring prizes for the 6th grade hoops contest to be held at halftime. This will be a fun new event for Westbriar!
Chairperson: On a monthly basis, the chairperson reaches out to room parents for one grade at a time to stock the staff room with treats (e.g. breakfast items, snacks, coffee and tea(.
Teacher Appreciation Week: Jenni Bae
Chairperson: Coordinates activities and events during Teacher Appreciation Week (in May). Responsibilities include coordinating with room parents to provide flowers for each teacher and staff member and organizing the annual teacher appreciation luncheon. Volunteers are needed to help arrange flowers, to help at the luncheon, and to provide donations of drinks and desserts for the luncheon.
