Westbriar Elementary School PTA
Westbriar Math Team (Grade 6)
(Math Olympiad Div. M, AMC 8, & MathCounts)
Westbriar Math Team is for 6th graders who enjoy math, problem solving, and thinking challenges. Students will learn to solve middle school level math problems every week and may compete in several middle school level math competitions: Math Olympiad Division M (Grades 6-8), AMC 8 (Grade 8 or below), and MathCounts (Grades 6-8). Students will also compete in Math Olympiad Division E as ‘test only’ meaning there will be no practice support for that competition. If students need practice support for Division E, they should either join the Math Olympiad program concurrently or instead of Math Team. Problems increase in level of difficulty with each competition.

In each Olympiad, students have 30 minutes to solve 5 math problems. Score is cumulative so participants should attend all five Olympiads. Students compete as individuals and as a team. www.moems.org
AMC 8 (American Mathematics Competition 8) is a national math exam for students in Grade 8 or below. It is 25 questions, 40 minutes long. Note: AMC 8 participation is to be confirmed. www.maa.org/math-competitions/amc-8
MathCounts is a national middle school math competition. Students compete against other 6th-8th graders in up to four different rounds: Sprint, Target, Team, and Countdown. Top scoring individuals advance from the School level competition to the Chapter level (Regionals). Only 10 students will advance to represent Westbriar at the Fairfax Chapter MathCounts Competition.
